There is some justification since the canonical Witch of the East was a tyrannical ruler in both the original book and film. Ascended Extra: The Wicked Witch of the East, who's just a pair of feet sticking out from beneath a house in Dorothy's tale, is now the Big Bad villain who instigates all the trouble in Oz.Joey King: Wheelchair-user girl/the voice of Little China Girl.Zach Braff: Frank, Oscar's assistant/the voice of Finley, the friendly flying monkey.Michelle Williams: Annie/Glinda, the Good Witch of the South.And You Were There: As an homage to the original 1939 Wizard of Oz film, several actors play and voice characters in both Kansas and Oz.This is presumably how Evanora managed to come back into power by the time of the original film. If it was broken, she'd be left powerless but would still have the knowledge to make another. This comes straight from the original Oz books witches made power centres to focus their magic. Breaking the artifact deprives the witch of all her power and breaks certain enchantments that's what happens to Evanora at the end. Glinda uses a wand, Evanora has a huge jewel in a pendant, and Theodora has a ruby ring. Ancient Artifact: Most witches, good and bad, appears to draw power from a jeweled artifact.Anachronism Stew: Despite the seemingly low technology setting in Oz, the houses in Munchkinland appears to have electric lamps.Averted with Theodora, who's a Shrinking Violet. Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Evanora even when trying to charm Oz is still quite aloof.Agony Beam: Evanora projects green lightning on Glinda, giving this scene a certain familiar vibe to it.In this film, she wields devastating pyromancy. Adaptational Badass: In the books and the film, the Wicked Witch of the West mainly relies on her armies of enthralled creatures to do her bidding, she seems to have some subtle enchantments (such as making a wire invisible) but doesn't seem to have much in the way of offensive magic.Granted, this is a prequel taking place long before Dorothy's adventure, but still.
May oz the great and powerful cast skin#
Adaptation Dye-Job: Glinda in the books has red hair, as does Billie Burke's portrayal of her in the original film.Notably, however, this character is a Canon Foreigner in the books, and was specifically created for the film adaptation. Adapted Out: Despite the premise following the film Wizard of Oz's concept of dual roles, a key character is missing: Elmira Gulch, the Wicked Witch of the West's analogue, the very first mirrored character revealed in the original film, is entirely absent.
